About Solomon

Portrait of Solomon Tsehaye, director and cinematographer

Creativity started early — I picked up painting as a young kid, long before I ever held a camera or a guitar.

In 1999, my friend and I built a full-size electric car for a local competition in Asmara, Eritrea — one of several hands-on, from-scratch projects that shaped how I still approach a film set: figure out how something works, then build it yourself.

I taught myself to read and write music in 2001. I couldn't afford a guitar at the time, so I built my own at home and taught myself to play it to a professional level — a foundation I still draw on for scoring films and documentaries.

From 2004 to 2014, I worked at Halibet and Orotta National Hospitals in Asmara, Eritrea — as IT Head, a medical research assistant, and a medico-legal interpreter. It's work that trained the same discipline and composure I bring to a film set today.

Filmmaking started in 2005, almost by accident: a first feature shot with friends, out of pure curiosity about how movies actually work. My first job was typing a friend's handwritten script into a computer, then editing the finished film myself on a PC I'd assembled myself — editing is what trained my eye for writing, directing, cinematography and lighting. I taught myself the rest of the craft the same way.

That editing work was recognized early: a national Best Film Editor honor, followed by international awards at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival in 2011 and 2012.

By 2014, film had become my full-time work. Since then, I've written, shot, directed, edited and graded music videos, documentaries, weddings, ad campaigns, social content and feature films, including extensive work with Eritrea's most prominent recording artist across features, documentaries and music videos.

Today, I work as a Multimedia Producer for a leading company, and take on freelance work as a writer, director, cinematographer, editor and colorist. Based in Kaiserslautern, working across Germany and internationally.
